NHS SBS Advanced Wound Care and Lymphoedema Framework: How Suppliers Can Stand Out

The NHS spends approximately £8.3 billion on wound care management every year. It is one of the most significant areas of clinical expenditure in the health service, and one of the most competitive for suppliers. The NHS SBS advanced wound care framework currently lists 62 awarded suppliers across its lots. Getting on the framework is an achievement. Staying relevant within it, and winning contracts through it, requires something more.

With SBS10142 due to expire in August 2026 and its successor in development, now is the time to take stock. Whether you are an existing supplier preparing to reapply, or a new entrant looking to secure your first place on this framework, this post is for you.

The scale of the opportunity

Wound care is a genuine strategic priority for the NHS. The National Wound Care Strategy Programme is driving efforts to standardise practice, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce the significant costs associated with unhealed wounds, which account for 67% of that £8.3 billion annual spend. Commissioners and procurement teams are under real pressure to demonstrate value. This encompasses not just price, but patient outcomes, efficiency, and sustainability.

That context shapes what NHS SBS is looking for from suppliers on this framework. More than simply a route to sell products, it is a mechanism for delivering integrated, outcomes-focused wound care across community and acute settings. Suppliers who understand that, and who write their bids accordingly, are the ones who stand out.

What SBS10142 covers

SBS10142 supports NHS and wider public sector organisations to procure the full spectrum of advanced wound care and lymphoedema products and services. Its scope is deliberately broad, structured across eight lots:

Buyers can access the framework via further competition, which is the default route. Direct award is an option where the conditions are met. Both routes are available, but the competitive mini-competition is the more common mechanism, which means your framework application is only the beginning.

Advanced wound care framework renewal: what suppliers need to know

SBS10142 was originally due to expire in August 2025. NHS SBS extended it by 12 months to 1 August 2026, citing unforeseen governance requirements related to new Cabinet Office Spend Control protocols. The successor framework is now being developed collaboratively with other accredited framework hosts. At the time of writing, no tender notice for the next generation framework has been published on Find a Tender.

That is both a challenge and an opportunity. There is no submission deadline bearing down on you right now, but that does not mean the time to prepare is later. These submissions take considerable time to do well, and the organisations that tend to score highest are the ones that have been gathering evidence, refining their case studies, and aligning their offering to NHS priorities long before the tender is published.

What to do once you’re on the framework

With 62 suppliers currently awarded across SBS10142’s lots, framework membership alone does not guarantee business. Buyers running mini-competitions will evaluate responses from multiple suppliers, and the quality of those responses determines who wins.

Direct award is an option under the framework, and some suppliers do benefit from it. But it is not a right, and it typically requires a clear and demonstrable justification. Most call-offs go through competition. That means every contract opportunity on this framework is, in effect, its own bid.

The implication is significant. Strong bid writing and management capability is not just useful at the application stage. It is an ongoing requirement for suppliers who want to convert framework membership into actual revenue.

What evaluators are looking for

Understanding the evaluation criteria in depth is the single most important thing a supplier can do before writing a single word of their application. Across NHS SBS frameworks, quality consistently accounts for the majority of the marks. The advanced wound care framework is no exception. Price matters, but it will not rescue a weak quality submission.

In practical terms, evaluators on this framework are looking for:

The mistakes that cost suppliers marks

Even experienced suppliers make avoidable errors. The most common ones we see include:

Building a bid that stands out

The strongest applications share a few common characteristics. They are written with the evaluation criteria in front of them at all times; every paragraph traceable back to a mark-winning point. They use case studies as proof, not filler, selecting examples that directly mirror the complexity and setting of the contracts being bid for. And they are reviewed critically before submission, ideally by someone outside the team who wrote them.

That last point is where many bids fall short. It is genuinely difficult to evaluate your own written work objectively, and the cost of a weak submission is high: not just in losing the framework place, but in the years before the next renewal cycle comes around. An independent bid review before you submit is one of the highest-value investments you can make in your application.

Preparing your bid strategy early also pays dividends. Deciding which lots to prioritise, identifying your strongest evidence, and mapping your social value commitments to NHS priorities are all decisions that benefit from time and clear thinking, not decisions to make the week before a deadline.
